Pre Production final edit

Finance:
so when I will be making my 1 minuet short film I will obviously need financing the reason this being is because I will need to have a budget for my short film and I will need to have financing to cover my budget that I will set for my short film. I will need to be funded by a company this will be Kick starter as they offer opportunities for younger teens to create their own films and this will be a perfect opportunity for me as an individual. but I will mainly have a secure budget of £40-£100 the reason that I will be ranging my budget this high for a 1 minuet short film is so I can secure different locations to film in which I will have to ask to film in I need to get permission but not only does this use up a large amount of the money I will receive but I will also need to use the money for props such as fake blood, masks, suits, fedoras and ties the reason I will need these props as I am filming thriller I will need to adjust the characters to my mies en scene theme to match a detective crime series this will also include areas and locations. I will need to pitch my idea to kick starter. The reason being is because I need to sell my idea across and also source my research and tie it in the pitch will persuade kick starter to give me the money and the correct budget to make my short film. Bank loans are also helpful as a have a fairly large time gap to give the money back to the bank so this give me time to arrange costs.

First I will need to go to kick starter then this way I can create a new project. I will be able to give Kickstarter my project which will be my 1 minuet short film and then this way they may accept the pitch which I will also give to them. Therefore i will not need to get the bank loan. This will be the easiest way to make by 1 minuet short film. Seeing is it

Timescale:
As I am filming my 1 minuet short film I will need a specific time in which to film in for example in the media industry it is not so forgiving as I will need a week to properly film and edit the sequence if it was the industry if were to fall behind on a deadline I will be sued for not meeting the appropriate deadline and this can result in people losing their property and ending up homeless as I have a week to record the sequence and edit it a I will not be in this deadline I will spend 3 days filming and I will also spend 2 days editing this will give more than enough time to film the short film I will be filming.

What’s also incredibly important is the schedule. this is going to be the main way in which I organize the shooting times for filming seeing as I am filming in Chislehurst woods I won’t need to much time as the trees in the woods make it look dark anyways but as its going to be shot at night time the times can become very complicated and this way it also can fix with a set schedule for 3 days Edit time is vital which is why i will use 2 days for editing. This is so I can use 2 full days to edit and use 2 hours for 3 days in the week to film. This will break away and lead straight to the deadline therefore his will complete the 1 minuet short film on schedule.

Personnel
For my staff I will need an able set of people who are well capable of handling all the necessary needs required in any film making production such as camera men and possibly lighting operators to directors and producers. these will be the embodiment of my short film as they will make everything happen in the industry and this also is making story boards getting the producer to arrange time zones and areas to film and record in. directors are very vital in this role as they will be the ones organizing the shot types and the way it will be filmed this includes the strong uses of close ups but editors are also key as they will assist on cutting the inappropriate or badly shot takes.

Since i am in collage and only a student I do not have a wide range of directors and producers at my disposal but I do have a crew who is dedicated to a particular set task such as directing and being a producer the producer will have to find the locations set to film in and the costs an hour so we have a clear understanding f how long we have to film. But location isn’t just one issue for the producer but also editing suite cost uses the software to edit are recording. Not only that but the directors are going to be the ones who are sequencing the camera shots this makes it easy for the actors to follow movements and as this is going to be a thriller sequence it is also in the directors power to direct all the fighting scenes if there are any.

Facilities:
for facility use I will need a range of different tools to help me when filming and editing the different equipment I will need is a tripod a camera a SD card a camera lens and I will need to book a studio for editing lighting equipment but I will only need a small amount of these things the reason this is, is because the studio is free to use in collage grounds and as I am a student I will have access to edit in the collage entirely for free the same thing applies with the camera as we have a set staff to book cameras out to students this means that I will be able to book a camera for a certain amount of time free and I will need to hand it back but if the camera ends up getting damaged I will need to pay the appropriate price for the piece of technology.

But that’s not all I will also need the correct software so I can edit the film I make and this piece of software is final cut the reason I will use this is because it is easy to edit a sequence and it makes it a lot easier to edit due to the various tools which it offers. such as the cutting tool this makes it so much easier for me to assemble good takes and bad takes and doing the editing this way I will be able to make bins were i can arrange all the files in separate folder on where they are meant to go this is one of the most important facilities and as I am a student I will be able to use the already installed content for free and this will help me the most.

When looking for an appropriate place to edit in this can become problematic for a producer the reason this being is very simple it’s not cheap. the cheapest studio can range from £100-£400 and this is purely for students were as the high end studios just to rent can exceed to £1400-£2000 this might only be for an hour of recording and editing time which is why it’s so important I should specify while I am only a student I have free access to the collages editing facilities this will also need to be booked as the editing suite and studio for voice overs may already be in use this is why the producer of our group will need to organize the booking time for the studios. But using the macs and final cut is not much of a problem the reason I will say this is because the macs are free for the media students to use. This like the studio may also be in use by a class or a group of people trying to edit their own work.

Materials:
as I am making my own short film in my own fashion it wouldn’t be needed for me to find sourced material although this also is not a bad thing were many films today have taken ideas and knowledge from other films with permission and used it for their own material as my film is more of an inspirational production I am not going to take characters from other film but partially base them in the same aspect of mies en scene. The ideas I had were from the original Texas chainsaw massacre and the silence of the lambs with the detectives and the psychopath. My idea is relevant to these but it is sourced from my own creative material so this way I will not struggle with going out and asking permission for the idea of the Texas chainsaw massacre. My thriller is a mix of slasher and crime to thriller genres that can be used in the same film to make one thriller embodiment.

another thing that normally happens strongly in anime, games and certain films is a pre made soundtrack that could be for a TV series or a game franchise but this music is created by their company and this is one great way to approach this were as i cannot make music there  are places were I can source music which is copyright free this can be YouTube but this is a very bland example I was thinking of using sound cloud as the have a wide range of music which I can take from it which is also copyright free. If I wanted to I could pay a certain amount of money so i could use say a particular song I would need to have the rights to use it. But this can be incredibly expensive and isn’t as necessary.

Contributors:
as I already have my short film team I will or may require assistance from people who are more experienced in the acting range this will mean getting actors or getting people to do various voice overs as my short film is only 1 minuet I don’t need professional actors to act in my film as I am a college student I do have access to the drama students so I can ask them to act for me this makes it easier to make a good flowing film but the actors are not the only concern were lighting operators could be used but this isn’t necessary as the film is going to be shot in the evening this will make it more effective.

Like I have mentioned actors there are many places which I can source them from this can be from magazines, articles even films if I was high in the industry but the point is it’s good to have a range of sources at your disposal so you can get ranges of actors in your short film this would actually be the producers job to find the suitable people to act in the film. Agencies are good as well this will open a door for me to get a well able team of suitable actors to participate in my short film but the collage also has drama students at its disposal this will not give them an opportunity as actors but will perform exceptionally in my 1 minute short film.

Locations:
Locations are vital in my short film they build a big impact and fit together with the mise en scene the locations that I will visit to film is the Chislehurst woods. the reason being is because it is a dark grainy atmosphere and I don’t need a large amount of places to film in as it is only a 1 minuet short film and not a 5 minuet short film this is not too distanced from the collage grounds and can be essentially an effect place to film in. although I did have ideas of filming in different locations but this would only complicate the story in my short film so I will film the sequence in one take in the Chislehurst’s woods.

The areas which I have chosen for my one minute short film are not complex I have chosen a simple location for the pure fact that I can make a good performance in the woods

Codes of practice and regulation:

As this 1 minuet short film does not contain nudity or gore, strong drug use but mild violence and this does not have strong language the reason I am doing my short film like this where it is a 15 is because there is blood violence and this can be rated at a 15 this is what my short film is going to be rated at 15 because I do not want it to be an 18 for a very particular reason the reason being is because I want to get a large audience to see this film this makes it easier to get comments from audiences and makes the film gain improvements from the comments that I will receive.

final proposal

Introduction

This is my proposal I have spent time in researching all the things necessary that will impact my short film heavily. I have gone over my idea for my 1 minute short film thoroughly and I have definitely made sure that it is a thriller. I have also gone over the target audience as they are the most important part of my film.
I have also looked online at many articles that may have given my one minuet short film a boost and to make my story more interesting.

Film synopsis

My 1 minute short film is about a detective who has come across this brutal murder of an innocent girl he soon realizes that his partner in crime is the one who committed this brutal act of violence and as the shock sinks in he finds that his friend he has known for years has knocked him out with a baseball bat this can be filmed in 1 minute as the time it takes for the detective to realize it was his partner is at the start of the sequence and the time it takes for his evil friend to sneak up behind him takes about 30 seconds. The hook my idea is the incredibly eerie atmosphere and the idea that the detective is scared out of his mind this creates suspense and this also creates a hook for the audience The twist is that the detectives best friend is the killer.

Film rating

In my 1 minute short film it will be a 15 and for a very good reason as I wanted to target more of an audience i decided that a good idea was to make this a 15 so it protects the psychological make up of younger audiences and it also doesn't have any hard drug use it does not contain much gore and also does not have any nudity or sexual scenes.

Primary research

when I was doing my research I was looking at a range of short films the reason being is that as my film is only 1 minute I thought using major pictures might be a bit problematic but this wasn't the case and reason being is that the major picture i looked at was the Silence of the Lambs this film was around 20 years ago and does not fit in with trends but most of the people I have talked to who are 18 and 15 watch older film and this is because this film was very effective but I also looked at a TV series this TV series was called Luther this program was about a detective with anger management issues. This was helpful as the main character played in my film was a detective.

this TV series about a detective with anger management took BBC by storm the episodes in series 3 got around 5 million views and this rate is climbing rapidly due to the popularity of the Luther series this is also thriller which is why i saw this as a great example.

Secondary research

For my other research I was looking into some short film festivals such as the London short film festival I thought that it would be a good idea as I can see what people have made and done I can check ratings from these. This is very effective as it helps me to understand how to make a very effective short film.

Summary of all research (conclusion)

Unique selling point

My USP is the most important part of my short film as i am actually basing it off of a real life story that happened back in 2001 this was the murder of Chandra Levy this was actually a really sad story as in 2001 the disappearance of Chandra Levy happened and her body was not found until eight years later this was really upsetting so I decided that I should use it in my short film and the USP also has a plot twist.

Budget

The budget the maximum amount that i would use for my short film if i was using a budget would be a maximum of £500 this pays for cameras and props. but as we are getting funded by the collage Christ the King St Mary's Sidcup so the Budget i would have for my short film will be £100 or props make up and other things such as locations and the prices.

Regulation and certification

as the age rating is going to be a 15 it will contain mild a amount of blood and violence this makes it classified be a 15 by the BBFC this will not contain sex scenes, nudity, gore, hard drug or bloody violence.

Revisions and changes

The changes i made from my original idea was that in the normal version the detective is not attacked and i only recently found the article of the murder in 2001 these were only minor changes and it also helped me a lot to get my USP up to a higher slandered.

Locations

The locations were very important there were many areas where it looked good to film and I wanted to make a list a narrow down the places were I wanted to film. One of the main places that would be suitable was Christchurch woods because it offers the perfect scenery which is needed. This is very effective for me as it makes it easier for me to get around and my whole sequence is filmed in the woods this makes the short film a bit more dull but seeing is its a 1 minute short film I don't have much time space to add many areas.

Distribution

distributing my film is a vital part of my short film this is because this is how i would make money in the industry but one of the main ideas that i had was to put it on YouTube this way I could get views depending on how many i would get i would then place this on a Netflix waiting list so that it could then get shown on a more stream film site.

Crew Roles

When making film there are a large amount of specific roles which producers and other workers have to work up to achieve. below are all the crew roles when it comes to filming in this case this is all of the things that are required when making particular films such as horror, thriller, sci fi, romance and many more different genres depending on the kind of film making.

Directors are the most important type crew members as they are the ones to decide who does what role in this case i would say the director has the most responsibility considering the fact they have to organize each camera shot each shot type and the angle in which the shot is being made from also sound and lighting the director also has control over these as he is visioning the story in his way so this is the way the director has control over all crew development.

Camera Operators are also vital to the filming industry as they capture all the various types of shots ranging from two shots, long shots, close up and many more shots the camera operators have full responsibility when it comes to there specific role because if they messed up on a serious scene chances are likely for them to get sued which puts them in debt which may end up leading to them being homeless. filming is very serious and it apply s to every single camera operator in the world it can be so easy to mess up this is why it is important for people working with camera to stay focused when filming there part.

Lighting Operators have a very interesting key role as they are the one who set the stage and the atmosphere in this case this is probably were films get most of there effects. such as in horrors and thrillers the main type of lighting used is low key lighting. this puts on a scene and makes it what it is this is very effective when it comes to horror as the dark lighting creates fear and tension and the idea of being in the dark is also very disturbing. Lighting operators have one of the more easier jobs as its not to bad to set up lighting in a specific scene.

The editor is one of the most important crew role members as in this case they make everything look good such as the camera angles they are used the sound the lighting they have full control on what happens when the film is actually done shooting in this case the editor has too much responsibility considering the fact that they sequence absolutely everything. even from time to time they might even add there own sound into the mix making the film even more cool.

The producers responsibility is to make sure that everything is in check such as the budget costs and more this can range to buying camera equipment, hiring make up artists, renting out studios to edit out voice overs or edit footage and they also have a responsibility for renting whole areas which can cost a fortune. In my eyes the producers are the ones who actually make the film happen due to pre planning as i have just mentioned all the things above such as studios and areas.

Make up artists are just to fill them small pocket holes such as in horrors you would hire make up artists to make the ghosts in the sequence look real and this is  entirely what makes your film unique the amount of horror in the sequence because the ghosts look so real this also apply s to murdered victims in various thrillers make up artists are responsible for making this happen.

Trends

Unique selling point

The Trends

trends and unique selling point used the unique selling point can become the trend so for example hunger games as it is based around teenagers killing each other the same trend applies with battle royal.

characters: characters can influence any genre or theme such as who the characters are or what the characters are such as in the film predator as you have your main protagonist which is dutch an american search and rescue soldier and you have your main antagonist which is the predator. this instantly makes the film a sci fi as the antagonist predator is a alien.

genre: genre is also very vital when it comes to making films the reason this being is genre defines what your film is going to be. such as a horror, sci fi, action and adventure this is important because it inclines what people are going to watch this so it applies heavily to your target audience. Such as in this film predator it uses sci fi and horror because of the fear it uses such as the scene were billy finds the bodies skinned alive this has strong horror elements. So when finding a genre for a particular film you can actually use two genre types.

audience/ peer assessing: The audience is extremely important as they will be the target audience who will be watching your film. This also gains your film popularity as the more people watch it the more you will get sub audiences.

structure: this falls under the line of your story and plot so in other words this is another way of structuring your film. such as the meaning of the film and how the film progresses.

story line/ plot: this is very important this determines what your story is going to be about this also refers to plots, plot twists, hook this makes your story more interesting because if you throw off a certain theme it can have meaning if it is done in the correct way.

mise en scene: this has a huge impact on the films as this has a huge part on making genre Mise en scene is used to create certain settings such as lighting props costumes make up Green screen. this all is used to create any sort of setting such as sci fi, action and adventure, thriller even horror. this is all in some what relevant to mise en scene.

themes: a theme is a idea your film is based around in this case your idea could be a sci fi or thriller but your theme is an alien abduction or a if it was a thriller there would be a psychopath.

interpretation: when we watch various films we are left over to interpretation this happens in various film such as horror and thriller as you are normally left on a hook or a twist at the end of the films this leves viewers over to interpretation as in particular film they have meanings which may help viewers understand the true moral message of the film.

The hunger games trailer: the genre of his film is a action and adventure the reason this being is because it has all the normal features of a action and adventure. The story also takes you to a forest location that seems very adventure when it comes to codes and conventions of genre which is action and adventure.

Divergent: this film seemed to be a sci-fi considering the way everything looks such as the futuristic settings and action this also has elements of action and adventure.

Maze runner: In this film it has all of the conventions of a sci-fi this has lots of references such as the monsters the maze and all the futuristic lasers
